Research has shown that children form long lasting attitudes to money at a very early age. Kids financial blue print is set in the first key 7 years of their lives and once it’s set it can prove tricky to change. So it’s important to develop a healthy attitude as early as you can. Piggy banks for Kids can make a huge impact in this critical area and time of development.
So take your children’s financial future in hand as quickly as you can. We’ll help you find the right pig or pigs for your child and guide you towards using them in a healthy and effective way.
Just by giving your child a piggy bank you’re making a great step towards teaching them how to manage their money. That said the effectiveness of this financial tool can be greatly improved by how we as parents teach our kids to use the piggy bank.
Here are a few suggestions to get the most out of your Piggy Bank.
Very often we drop a few coins in the pig and just forget about it. What would your accountant or bank manager have to say if we as adults took the same approach to managing our finances?
Try to choose a Piggy Bank that is easy to open. Open it up every couple of weeks and help your child count up the coins and notes. Let them see how their savings are growing. Just by counting with them you are helping them with their arithmetic in a very real way. Then you can apply it to things that they’d like to use the money for. You can ask them: ” Now what could we afford to buy if we spent this money today?” This really simple question has an amazing effect. What it stimulates is the power of a childs imagination and that in turn if you believe it or not will actually help them materialize their goals.
The next step is to help them with a bigger goal. ” Is there something more expensive that you want to save for? How much does it cost?” You’re trying to nurture your child into setting goals and achieving them. You can put up a picture of the toy on the wall above the piggy bank. This will help the child to fix the goal in their imaginations and guide them towards making it a reality.
Taking things a step further you can now buy piggy banks that have more than one slot. With my five year old we have 2 Piggy banks. One is called Fun and the other is called Freedom. Every month we empty out Fun and he gets to choose something special he wants to do with the money. The Freedom Pig just gets fatter and fatter. We count this money every month too. Later that money will get invested and the proceeds of the investment will return to the Pig. This money can only be made to make money. When it does make money you can divide the proceeds into either pig so your child learns that when you feedĀ the Freedom Pig it starts to feed Fun Pig too.
The next step is to introduce other pigs. Save, Spend Invest, Donate and how about Education!
