How much does it cost?” You’re trying to nurture your child into setting goals and achieving them. You can put up a picture of the toy on the wall above the piggy bank. This will help the child to fix the goal in their imaginations and guide them towards making it a reality.

Taking things a step further you can now buy piggy banks that have more than one slot. With my five year old we have 2 Piggy banks. One is called Fun and the other is called Freedom. Every month we empty out Fun and he gets to choose something special he wants to do with the money. The Freedom Pig just gets fatter and fatter. We count this money every month too. Later that money will get invested and the proceeds of the investment will return to the Pig. This money can only be made to make money. When it does make money you can divide the proceeds into either pig so your child learns that when you feed  the Freedom Pig it starts to feed Fun Pig too.

The traditional Ceramic Piggy Bank holds very fond memories for me. Ever since i can remember we’ve had a rather large deep blue chinese style porcelain pig in the family. I have very strong memories of a yearly ritual that we undertook before every family holiday.

There was only one way to get the coins out and that was the same way they went in. My brother and I  developed a fine technique using a butter knife to help the coins slide back out faster. It still took what seemed like hours and with the years the hole slightly widened with the wear.
